Indonesian President Widodo Tells Biden: Do More to ‘Stop the Atrocities in Gaza… Ceasefire is a Must’
On Monday, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, met with President Joe Biden at the White House.
A major stated purpose of the event was to mark “a historic new phase” in the countries’ bilateral relations, as the two heads of state “elevated U.S.-Indonesia ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
Widodo, however, had another high-priority item on his agenda: Calling for a ceasefire, and an end to the “atrocities” in Gaza:
Before the meeting, both presidents made brief statements to the press.
After mentioning a few specific items like maritime security, “the climate crisis,” supply chains, and “the clean energy transition,” Biden noted that the two nations have had “nearly 75 years of cooperation,” adding that he is “of the view our partnership is stronger than it’s ever been and is going to continue to get stronger.”
When it was his turn, Widodo spoke for only 87 seconds, saying:
It is an honor for me to fulfill the invitation from President Biden to visit Washington, D.C.
The U.S. is one of the most important partners for Indonesia.
And we agreed to elevate our partnership into Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
But most importantly, we have to give a real meaning to it.
For Indonesia, economic cooperation is priority, including on supply chains issues.
Indonesia also wishes our partnership contribute to regional and global peace and prosperity.
So, Indonesia appeals to the U.S. to do more to stop the atrocities in Gaza.
Ceasefire is a must for the sake of humanity.
Once again, thank you for your invitation, President Biden. Thank you.
In response to this, Biden said thank you back and made a joke about climate.
As recently documented by Decensored News, the Biden Administration and its State Department has shamefully refused to acknowledge the extent of the massacre taking place in Palestine, let alone Israel’s war crimes.
They’ve also refused to directly answer questions about whether they recognized the Fourth Geneva Convention as applying to the West Bank and Gaza, which may signal that they are – to quote international law professor Francis Boyle – knowingly “going along with Israel turning Gaza into a free-fire zone.”
Israeli Holocaust scholar Raz Segal and longtime UN human rights official Craig Mokhiber have called Israel’s assault “a textbook case of genocide,” with Mokhiber – who recently stepped down due to the UN High Commissioner’s inaction – recommending that a claim be brought to the World Court.
